Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne in particular, and Gateshead on the opposite bank of the River Tyne is steeped in history and tradition, with the Roman Wall, built by the Emperor Hadrian, stretching from Wallsend, in the east, to Carlisle, on Cumbria's west coast. It was built to keep out the marauding scots. The Tyne shipyards where some of the greatest ships in the world were built. Newcastle is a city of culture with its castle, cathedral, many churches and museums (and the famous Geordies known worldwide as the most friendly and welcoming people you could wish to meet).
